John Alcorn Named as Public Safety Director For The City of Grosse Pointe

Chief John Alcorn                                                       John Alcorn gets sworn in as the City's new Public Safety Director by Municipal Judge Russell F. Ethridge

On January 22, 2021, Grosse Pointe City Manager Pete Dame named John Alcorn as the Public Safety Director for the City of Grosse Pointe. This announcement followed a widely posted, open search, and an extensive interview process. This appointment took effect on Monday January 25, 2021 with the swearing-in ceremony pictured above.

Alcorn, who previously served as the City's Deputy Director of Public Safety, replaces Steve Poloni who is leaving the position to become the administrator for Grosse Pointe Shores.

Alcorn has worked for the City since 2001.  He progressed steadily through the ranks, serving first as a Public Safety Officer, promoted to Sergeant in 2007, and then Lieutenant. During that time, he has served as detective, field training officer, and fire marshal.  Most recently he was named Deputy Director in 2018.   He has led the Department's expanded training program and was instrumental in the planning of the functional requirements of the City's new Public Safety building.  Some of the initiatives for which he was responsible include the City's S.A.L.E. program for senior assistance and the school outreach program at Maire School.

Complementing Alcorn's wide range of background in public safety, Alcorn holds related certifications and degrees in the field.  As the son of a police sergeant, he successfully pursued a degree in Sociology with an emphasis in social and criminal justice at Central Michigan University.  He also holds a graduate certificate in criminal justice leadership from Madonna University.  He attended the Northwestern University Staff and Command School for supervisory training.  He had been selected to attend the prestigious FBI National Academy in 2020 prior to the onset of COVID-19.

“I am pleased to be able to announce the promotion of John Alcorn for this important position. John is uniquely capable of advancing the City's Public Safety Department to an even higher level of excellence,” stated Pete Dame, City of Grosse Pointe City Manager.   Alcorn has received numerous commendations and awards, including being named Officer of the Year twice, in 2005 and 2017.   Dame added, "I am confident that John's stellar record of service to the Grosse Pointe community will only shine brighter in his new role as Public Safety Director."
