New City Ordinance – Section 78-71, Disconnect Downspouts From Sewer System

NEW CITY ORDINANCE – SECTION 78-71, DISCONNECT DOWNSPOUTS FROM SEWER SYSTEM

At the October 18, 2022 City Council Meeting, Council approved an ordinance to disconnect roof downspouts from the City’s sewer system.  As Michigan’s wet spring weather rapidly approaches, it is ideal to address this now.  The disconnection of downspouts from City storm sewers is one of the simplest ways to reduce storm water runoff from residential property. Downspout disconnection re-directs rooftop runoff collected by eavestroughs away from City storm sewers and onto lawn or landscaped areas.  The concept is intended to get our built environment to better utilize the natural environment to provide drainage, rather than using pipes, pump stations, and treatment facilities.

Please use the information below that shows how to disconnect a downspout.  If you have questions or concerns about downspout disconnection, you can call the City’s building or code inspector at 313-885-5800. Please be aware that the City of Grosse Pointe will begin City-wide enforcement of the City ordinance requirement for downspout disconnections this year.
